ok, so, wright gala recap! \o/ [i typed most of this up and THEN went and found videos, so if i quote things he said and then you watch and you're like "uh, that wasn't what he said" plz forgive me, i was working from hazy overstimulated memory. ALSO most of the videos have hi-res versions available, so i recommend going and watching them in hi-res on youtube, because dude was looking all sorts of fine last night.]

this is really long (twss!), i realize, but humor me and read it anyway? :D

i got into grand central at around 3:30 and met up with my girls, and we went back to the apartment where we were staying so we could all get cute for david (we succeeded admirably, i do believe) and get started with our drinking (also successful). we hopped in a couple of cabs to get to the hard rock, but as we got close to times square the traffic was just too awful, so we got out and walked the last few blocks.

there was a huuuuuuge line to get in so we stood around waiting for a while, and a dude came and gave us our wristbands for the open bar (yay) and whatever, none of this is interesting. so we get inside finally and it was really nice. there was some dude right when we got inside who i totally thought was derek jeter, but nobody else seemed to care about him so i'm assuming i was wrong, idk. he was cute, regardless. :P

we went and got drinks and checked out the silent auction stuff, and then we found ourselves a little area to chill in. we were standing around chatting and we decided we needed to toast, so we toasted to neal ("to the doctor!") and literally, like, 5 seconds later this big burly dude is like "excuse me", so we move out of his way, and who's right behind him? DAVID MOTHERFUCKING COOK. brooke spotted him first and frantically goes "look look look!!!!" to kelly, all O.O and david saw her and kind of smirked and smiled at her (ugh, i love him) and so he shakes brooke's hand, and then her mom's hand, and then kelly's and then meeeeeeee! i was SO shocked to see him, which was good because i didn't have a chance to panic, i just reached out and he took my hand i was like "hiiiii daaaaavid!!!" and he said hi back and smiled and was really friendly and seemed, like...happy to see us? and then the SECOND he got past me i went "WHAT THE FUCK?!?!" and i'm like 95% sure he heard me, lmao. we got totally lucky, tho, because i don't think many people got a chance to even say hi to him - he appeared from out of nowhere and then they rushed him into the theater.

moral of the story? neal is clearly some sort of demi-god and you should always toast to him. *nods*

anyway, so we all lost our shit for a few minutes and recounted exactly what happened 6000 times, and then we realized we should stake out a good spot to get into the theater. so we wedged ourselves in and waited, and then all of a sudden i see joey's head, because the boys (and lilly, neal's ex who was there taking photos, idk) were squeezing past us to get into the theater.

so i hit kelly and i go "look it's joey" and she goes "joey!" and then i go "and kyle!" and she goes "kyle!" and then i go "and andy!" and she goes "andy!" and then i go "NEAL NEAL NEAL!!111one!" LMAO. I WAS A LITTLE EXCITED ABOUT NEAL YOU GUYS, NGL.

finally they let us into the theater and i almost got trampled trying to get down the stairs (in my extremely fucking stupid high-heeled boots, omg, my feet hurt SO BAD by, like, 7:30). however, it worked out, because i was only one person off the barricade! \o/ there was a VIP section in front of us and i kind of hated them, but i had an awesome view - we were situated kind of in the center of dave and neal, so i was a very happy girl. the only person i couldn't see well was andy, which was sad, but i saw plenty of him in tulsa at extremely close range, lol, so it was ok. <3

before the concert, they had a live auction; some radio chick was the auctioneer and she brought david wright out first, and you guys, he is so fucking cute. i have no idea if there's video of him talking about cook, but he was really sweet before he brought him out, talking about how he's a good friend and a great friend to the foundation and he was playing for free and he has an album coming out next week and just...very cute. so cook came out then and they bro-hugged and i squealed, because CUTE. and cook said some stuff about how happy he was to be there and how he expected some season tix out of david wright, hee. and it was hilarious, because the auctioneer chick said something about how she felt like she was getting ready to auction off some bachelors, and cook totally sashayed up to the front of the stage and did a model stop and pivot and sassy look. soooo funny. i would've paid 100000000000 american dollars for a date with that boy. or even five minutes.

aha! this doesn't have DW's intro, but it has dave coming out and being adorable.

then cook bailed and they did the auction - they had an american idol package with a trip to the finale and airfare and all that, a "david and david extravaganza" (lol) that included tix to see DC on regis and kelly and some kind of hookup to hang with DW at a mets game, and some other baseball package with a suite and a bunch of signed baseballs and some other shit, idk.

THEN IT WAS TIME FOR THE SHOWWWWWWWWW. \o/ \o/ \o/

they opened with "heroes" and the mix wasn't great, but it still sounded awesome, and it was a great way to get the crowd going, i think. and i was excited that neal and andy sang the "you're still standing" part of the chorus every time, because NEAL! in case my obsession with him has gone unnoticed. :/

it was funny - all night, the crowd was totally singing along to the parts of the songs we knew from the thirty second clips we had, lol. david noticed, too, and i swear to god it seemed like he knew which parts we would know. STOP LURKING THE INTERNETS, DC.

also, i forget when this happened, but timmy, the guitar tech from the AI tour (the one dave liked to introduce and embarrass before "my hero") was there! i thought i'd recognized him but i wasn't sure, but then dave introduced him at some point. very cute. i'm not sure if he's going to be staying with dave or was just there for the night, but either way it made me smile.

anyway, after "heroes" they played "mr. sensitive," which i fucking LOVED. it was more rocked-out than i expected and david sang his hot ass off. the chorus has been stuck in my head ever since. i kind of want it to be a single. once again, we all totally sang along with the parts we knew. :D afterwards he introduced the band. <3

next david said "if you watched saturday night live, you heard this song; it's called declaration" and the place went nuts. everyone near me was singing every word at the top of their lungs and david was totally feeling the love. OH and during the first verse, brooke and kelly and i were all pointing to him and singing along and, like, kind of punching our finger-pointed arms to the music, you know? and he totally looked at us and grinned and started doing it back to us! XD XD XD (~~AND I CANNOT FIND *ANY* VIDEO OF DECLARATION ON YOUTUBE, WHYYYYYY???? D:~~ SQUEE!)

next came some hilarity, omg. he got his acoustic guitar (i think it's the hummingbird? the one with the flowers) and then he said he wanted david wright to come up on stage. and dwright was way in the back so it took him a minute to get up there, and dave's like "hey, it's cool, i've got nowhere to be." and he also said someone named rami needed to come out. and i was thinking of ramiele and i was like wtf?

so dwright finally makes it up on stage and stands next to dave, and dave tells him he can stand there but not to look at him, because his chiseled features make him nervous, ahahaha. dave starts talking about how they went out to dinner last night with a few other players who will remain nameless (lol) and how dwright was talking about how he loves playing rockband and he wants some rockstar tips from dave or something. so dave's like "you're gonna get your first lesson right now. nobody's a rockstar unless they wear guyliner." and we all start screaming in approval and dave's like "don't you guys think?" so dave gets rami, who it turns out is the makeup girl, to put eyeliner on poor dwright right on stage and he was blushing beet red and it was hysterical (i think dave said it was going to look hot, lololol), and then they hugged and he made a fast exit, lmao. dave: "david wright in guyliner!" <333

oh ok, here's a video:

this video has the end of the guyliner thing, but more importantly it has "lie" which was mostly acoustic and fucking gorgeous.

next was "life on the moon" and it was awesome. he thanked everyone for being there, including his dad, aw, and said he was on that stage for...reasons beyond him, or something like that, and said he hoped this was the beginning of a long and fruitful career or proving us all right, and he intro'd LOTM as a song about the last year and a half of his life. it's definitely one of my favorites. the line "self-conscious to a fault" makes my heart clench a little, tbh. <33333

after LOTM dave asked if we were still having a good time (we were!) and said this would be the last song, but maybe it didn't have to be (something to that effect) and then he was like "did i just fish for an encore? that's not cool. HEY, DWRIGHT! there's lesson #2 - guyliner, good. begging for an encore, bad." rofl.

so then he sang "light on." and it was cool, because some chick near us had brought a zillion glowsticks and passed them out and told us to crack them when he sang light on. so we did, and he stopped the song and was all excited and made them turn all the lights down so there were just glowsticks or cellphones "or the light on iphone app that you can get in the itunes store for $1.99!" hee. &dcook; so then they started the song again and it was awesome and 345364 times better than on SNL and he stopped singing during the piano-only part of the chorus after the bridge and we all sang the shit out of it for him. <3

then he left, woe. but we all screamed our faces off and people were chanting his name and stomping their feet and generally going nuts, and then kyle came out and did a crazy drum solo and then david came and joined in and joey started on a cymbal, and then they played "bar-ba-sol" and it was RADDDDD and all of our clothes fell off. and there was a dave/neal guitar face-off of HOT (IN WHICH WE ALL WERE WINNERS and i'm not going to lie to you guys, i wanted to grab their heads and shove them together and make them make out like they were ken and ~~barbie~~, uh, ken) and i died in a major way. kjdfhfkj.

we staggered out after the concert and lurked outside for a while to no avail. well, we did get to see david wright off, and christ, he is cute, but no sign of the cook. eventually some chick who'd been waiting for dwright said dave came out at like 8:45, which was right after his set ended. woe! oh well.

afterwards we took a towncar back to the apartment and changed our shoes(!!!!!) and then went and got some food, by which point i was WICKED nauseous, i think because i was drinking vodka before we left and then gin at the bar. :/ then we went back to the apartment and wrestled with technology and failed to stream the album, but we did get to look at some pics for the gala and were generally just thrilled with life.

i'm still on a high. i'm so, so happy i was there, you guys, i cannot even.

ALSO HEY GO CHECK OUT THE STREAM OF HIS ALBUM BECAUSE IT'S FUCKING AMAZING! i love pretty much everything. i could do without "i did it for you" (not because i dislike it, it just isn't doing anything for me), but otherwise? LOVE. early favorites are "life on the moon", "mr. sensitive", "bar-ba-sol" which continues to make my clothes fall off, and "permanent" which breaks my fucking heart. OH! and there's a hidden track at the end of "a daily anthem" which is AWESOME AS FUCK, make sure you leave it on. it's like 12 mins in.
