one of many reasons why i really do not enjoy idolforums; re: john lennon's "imagine":
uh. wot? does she mean "hippie"? because "imagine"? yuppie? i do not think it means what you think it means.
also, a semi-spoilery rant about tonight's show (it was taped over the weekend): according to some girl who attended the taping (and who, i freely admit, sounded completely clueless so she may be giving questionable information), the judges criticized jason castro for playing guitar, because he played last week already.
i'm sorry (oh wait, no i'm not), but i don't comprehend how playing guitar (or any other instrument), as long as it's played well, should ever be considered a negative, even if a contestant chooses to do so in every single performance. it's not some kind of gimmick, for christ's sake. AI detractors have bitched for years about how the show is just glorified karaoke and how the contestants don't write songs or play instruments, so TPTB allow instruments and then the judges criticize jason for choosing to play? because playing guitar somehow, what, takes away the validity of his performance? wtffffffff. let's tell bruce springsteen to lose the guitar and billy joel to step away from the piano. (not saying any of these AI clowns are of that caliber, but i think the example is still relevant.)
and it's not just because i like jason so much, either. i absolutely loathe michael johns, as y'all may have noticed. but if he wants to come out every week and play guitar, i wouldn't begrudge him one bit. the rules say that they can play, and i see no reason why anyone shouldn't. i was actually SHOCKED that castro was the only person of the entire top 24 who played the first week. if i were on AI and i could play an instrument, i absolutely would. i just don't get it.
of course, it could turn out that this girl completely misunderstood/misinterpreted the judges' comments, in which case my bitching may be rendered invalid. BUT NONETHELESS, I STAND BY MY IRE UNTIL PROVEN WRONG.
oh, also! i only got one comment on my last entry, and i'm not complaining, but i pimped an awesome music-sharing community and uploaded a rad song, so if you missed it, you may want to check it out! XD
I think it is a well-writen song, but I definitely don't like all of the lyrics. [snipped potentially spoilery comment] It's a yuppie song fo sho. (But I love John Lennon, nonetheless.)

Date: 2008-02-26 07:37 pm (UTC)I totally agree re: the guitar thing. You know what? His guitar-playing makes him really hot. He's hot without it but if it improves his performance, who cares? It's not like modern day recording artists all play without instruments. Look at John Mayer or Jack Johnson.

Date: 2008-02-26 07:48 pm (UTC)i really hope that the airheaded little girl who went to the taping just misunderstood the judges so i have one less thing to be annoyed about, but it sounds exactly like the kind of asinine critique they'd spew, so...eh.

Date: 2008-02-26 07:50 pm (UTC)hee, i feel the exact same way. it's bad enough that we have these stupid themes for the semis (god, i miss the free-choice aspect of last year); it's like they want to suck every opportunity for individuality out of the competition. hate!

...wot. Just... I can't... I tried to formulate a response here that was meaningful and points out the repetitive and contradictory nature of Idol as a whole... but I really have is BZUH?! O.o I'll just let Bshorty speak for me. ^ *pokes icon*

I was floored too! All these years that contestants have bitched about not being allowed and we (or at least I) have bitched about them not being allowed and they allow it and noone does it?! HMPH.

Date: 2008-02-26 07:54 pm (UTC)That made me LOL so much. :D And as much as I love Idol and the past contestants and whatnot...I think having Jason play guitar is getting the ball rolling on Idol having some ACTUAL MUSICAL CREDIBILITY! And I agree with you, I was surprised more of the contestants didn't play instruments the first week...though I can see contestants being hesitant because I'm sure it's nerve wracking enough to just have to SING in front of an audience and cameras and the like.
And this is yet another reason for us to be thankful that Josiah bb did not make it to the top 24.

Date: 2008-02-26 08:49 pm (UTC)But I'm stuck on that tonight's show was taped over the weekend? Why? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of, I don't know.. LIFE? Isn't the whole POINT of the performing rounds that they're live?
Idol's making it very hard for me to like it this year.
... I totally went and checked out that music post. That seems soo cool! I signed up!!
