"Once more, With Feeling" was actually what brought me to Buffy. And When I read your subject just now, I got that feeling again, that feeling where my heart's in my throat and tears almost well up in my eyes a little...yeah
Eeeee!!!!!!!!!!! I remember I was in class while still in college and MY PROFESSOR burst into "Where do we go.... from here....?" Like, she actually sang it. And I was all "Meep!!!" And she goes, "Any Buffy fans in here?"
Somewhere in the recesses of my lj there are many squee posts about this episode. Being a bit of a musical theater geek it was extra fun to play find-the-homage. It's strangely one of the best musicals I'd seen in a long time as well. Go figure.
OMWF is what got me into Buffy. My sophomore college roommate was way religious, and considered downloading music a sin against God. One day I came home and there was a burned CD on her desk titled "Once More With Feeling- for religious use only*." I was like WTF and popped that shit into my CD player only to hear... a musical? What? Google told me it was the musical episode from Buffy... wasn't that that WB show about a blonde chick killing vampires? Well, now I had to know more... I downloaded the episode and never looked back. I got totally obsessed. I worked in a campus coffeehouse and played the soundtrack endlessly for the rest of the school year.
*As I later found out, her church group was doing a musical about faith or something, and was using "Going Through the Motions" as a song about going to church/praying etc. without really having faith in God. Also they used "Kiss the Girl" from the Little Mermaid, except changed it to "Don't Kiss the Girl" to make it a song about abstinence.
