Newspapers and such have a lot of guidelines that aren't used in regular writing.

i'm willing to negotiate on them when necessary, if the meaning's ambiguous otherwise, or if it's a long list with multiple "ands" or whatever. but a basic list of tom, dick and harry will never be "tom, dick, and harry" as far as i'm concerned. :D

(Not really. I am armchair passionate.)
It weirds me out to not see a second comma in that Tom, Dick, and Harry list.

i have bigger grammar battles to fight within myself though, like conquering my addiction to ellipses. and semi-colons; i use those a lot too. (c wut i did there? lol.) problem is when i lay off the semi-colons i tend to replace them with a comma; i know it's incorrect but i do it anyway and i don't know why. it irks me to see it done too much, yet i only add to the problem. oh, and starting too many sentences with 'and,' when it should only be used as occasional emphasis. i should also lay off the fragments too, but 95% of the writing i do these days is just blogging or posting comments so proper grammar, punctuation, capitalization, ETC. (jeebus help me) tends to fall by the wayside. (i think i miss the days when i used to care.)
